A Safe, Effective “No-Pull” Option for Better Leash Control

The Freedom Harness is a popular “no pull” harness designed to reduce pulling and give the human more control on walks. Its unique double-connection leash clips to both the chest and the back, offering safer, more balanced handling—especially for energetic or inexperienced dogs.

Why We Use the Freedom Harness

  • Helps reduce pulling without choking the dog

  • Gives the handler better steering and control

  • Properly fitted, it is nearly escape-proof

  • Ideal for dogs new to leash walking, excited by city life, or prone to pulling hard on a collar

When to Use It

The Freedom Harness is great for foster dogs who need safer, more controlled walks. However: Always remove the harness indoors, and especially when a dog is crated or unsupervised.

  • Harnesses can rub skin if worn constantly

  • Dogs can chew through them easily when bored

  • These harnesses are expensive, so keeping them intact is a huge help

How to Put the Freedom Harness On

Identify the Back D-Ring

Look for the strap or small piece that has a different color—this marks the back ring.

Unclip Both Side Buckles

These will fasten behind the dog’s front legs.

Slip the Neck Loop On

The loop with the red-marked circle goes over the dog’s head like a necklace. The velvet-like strap goes under the chest.

Clip the Double Leash

Attach the double leash to:

  • The back D-ring

  • The metal chest ring And always add the safety clip to the collar. This ensures your dog stays attached even if they slip out of the harness.

How to Use the Double Leash

  • Hold the handle (it’s a different color).

  • Let the leash glide freely through the metal ring at the handle base.

  • In crowded areas, “choke up”, grip closer to the dog on both sides of the metal piece to keep them safely beside you.

Adjusting the Harness for a Correct Fit

There are four adjustment points. Adjust in this order:

  1. Under the chest barrel

  2. Both front chest straps (adjust evenly to keep the front D-ring centered)

  3. The vertical strap connecting the front to the chest barrel—tighten until it lies flat

A proper fit = secure, comfortable, and escape-resistant.

Should You Always Use the Double Leash?

All dogs using Freedom Harnesses should be walked with the double leash clipped to both rings.

If you only have a regular leash or staff gives permission, clip it to the chest ring, not the back. Back-only clipping encourages pulling (except for tiny dogs with throat sensitivities).
